FAQ
Malibu story pole questions
Malibu’s published policy requires them for Coastal Development Permits and certain discretionary Administrative Plan Review requests. The Planning Manager may grant a waiver where no adverse scenic impact is possible.
The policy places installation after departmental review and before public-hearing notice, or 10 days before notice of application is mailed for specified projects without a hearing. Confirm the case schedule with the assigned planner.
For the project categories identified in the policy, certification may be provided by a licensed surveyor, civil engineer or architect. The owner may not certify.
The published policy describes sturdy poles, black pole tops, height markings and bright orange construction mesh along roof and ridge lines. The approved plan controls the project.
They remain during the approval process and are removed within seven calendar days after the final appeal period expires unless Planning approves another arrangement.
